It seems now a days that when it comes to staying healthy all focus is on the rising obesity rate in children. But are children the only ones having to deal with staying healthy? I think not. Everyone struggles with having to stay healthy especially freshman in college who are dealing with many new changes and stresses in life. However there isn't a lot of information out there for us on how to help keep us healthy in our first stressful year of college. As a fellow freshman who is trying to stay healthy I found the following tips for staying healthy from Fox Business in the article Tips for Staying Healthy in College by Emily Driscoll. Hope this helps!
The first tip is for avoiding the awful freshman 15. Eating healthy can be hard especially when we have so many options to choose from. A good way to eat better is by adding fruits and vegetables to your diet and to eat smaller portions more frequently which allows you to get less hungry. Second thing you can do to stay healthy is by exercising. Not all of us are gym crazy but don't worry there are simpler ways of exercising. Walking to classes is an everyday exercise that everyone gets. It's simple and easy. A fun way to exercise is by joining an intramural team of a sport that you enjoy. You can even play with your friends. The third step is by getting enough sleep which is one of the hardest things to do will all the work and studying students do. Not getting enough sleep makes you less successful then if you were to study less. It prevents you from concentration and can lead to physical problems. The last thing you can do to stay health is limit the amount of alcohol you consume. Alcohol has a large amount of calories and therefore is a fast way to gain weight if you drink every weekend. Alcohol also affects the way you sleep and keeps you from getting the deep sleep that allows you to focus and be energetic. Staying healthy may seem hard with all the work we have but in actuality it can be simply and easy.
I completely agree with your advice to avoid the freshman 15 in college; it is extremely accurate and helpful. Eating healthy and exercising on a regular basis is key to staying fit, feeling good, and NOT gaining the freshman 15. I also agree on your alcohol statement, not only is it bad for you liver and well being in general, but it is like drinking liquid fries.
ReplyDeleteFrom my first hand knowledge, staying healthy this year was so hard! And I somewhat failed...those Duke's milkshakes are just too good to give up. But I agree getting exercise makes you not only stay fit but it makes you feel better so you can get all your other work done in a timely manner and still get sleep. Next year I need to force myself to get out and go to the gym even in the freezing winter months. These are good tips because I know a lot of people struggle with the freshman 15.
ReplyDeleteThrough my experience of somewhat keeping off the freshman 15, everything listed was very true and relatable. I can tell on days I don't get much sleep, I am more susceptible to being lazy and not exercising like I normally do. I do agree that going to the gym on a regular basis is very difficult, but I try to do it. Usually I go three to four times in the week which also helps me keep off the weight. Going to the gym also releases endorphins which make me be a better student and more studious and able to study which is a plus too.
ReplyDeleteThose tips are all great things. I know personally I have been able to turn the Freshman 15 into only the Freshman 10. Which actually helped me get in the healthy weight. And I definitely agree that getting the right amount of sleep is the most important thing. That being said it is also one of the hardest to do. At least for me, it's easier to force myself go to the gym or eat healthy then it is for me to decided to go to sleep earlier. Also, an interesting fact about alcohol is that alcohol has about 7 calories per gram. The only thing has a greater ratio is fat which has 9 calories per gram. If you do the math, there are a little over 28 grams in an ounce. 28 grams x 7 calories/gram = 196 calories/oz of alcohol. Now that is of course if you drink one ounce of straight alcohol but you get the point. So like you said if you are trying to lose weight make sure you limit the amount of alcohol.
